Ismael Franco began his Daito-ryu training at Tora Dojo in Kearny, New Jersey under JoAnn VanGieson sensei in 1996, until she moved out of state and left the ownership and instruction to him.
In August 2001, Franco sensei took over the ownership and instruction of Tora Dojo from JoAnn VanGieson sensei. Making him the second generation owner/chief instructor of the school. Since that time he has managed to increase membership and promote several black belts.
Until March 2012, Franco sensei advanced his training through the study of Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu under Tim Tung, Shihan of the Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu Bokuyo-kan. Franco sensei also trained with the Daito-ryu Aiki-jujitsu Ginjukai under Joe Brogna sensei and Howard Popkin sensei.
